Unlike other short cruises we have taken, we did not find the ship to have as much of a “party” atmosphere as we expected. Given the port-intensive four-day cruise, our participation in the daytime activities was a bit limited. If you stay on the ship during the day, there are your typical trivia sessions and demonstrations that occur throughout the ship. It would have been great if the ship had some enrichment talks featuring historians or cultural experts offering more insights into the Cuban people and the island’s history. Our main purpose in booking this itinerary was so that we could be among the first to travel to Havana on a mainstream cruise line. (Royal Caribbean, Carnival and various luxury vessels also now cruise to Cuba.) Our two days ashore were spent getting to know the people, history and culture of this historic city.

Crowds are nicely dispersed among the different venues and activities. They include a living room, dining room and separate bedroom with king-size bed. At night, the atmosphere at the Spinnaker Lounge is charged when the music comes up and the stage becomes a dance floor. We recommend getting the Norwegian Cruise Line specialty dining package. For the most part, the package entitles guests to all the starters and desserts they want and one entrée of your choice. We found it to be a great value and pre-purchasing this option before the cruise saves you even more money. The children’s area on deck 7, Splash Academy, is for children ages 3-12 with staff members who create personalized onboard activities for your little ones based on their ages. The area was quite small and tucked right next to the Arcade.

The kids' facilities tend to operate from morning to night on sea days, and from the time the ship leaves a port until late at night, though they generally close during dinner. Parents and their kids can visit and walk through the facilities to get a sense of what they're like on their first day onboard from late morning until late afternoon. Passersby (and parents who want to check in without being obtrusive) can look in on the action via portholes in the hallway. The ship also has a good-sized casino, located on Deck 7, which is open when the ship is at sea.

You'll find scheduled exercise, aerobics, and spinning classes. You can also start your day off with a run or walk around the outdoor track. Norwegian Sky has a large number of cabins that can accommodate families, with third and fourth berths, and by connecting staterooms. Several cabins across multiple categories accommodated those with disabilities, including a few for those with hearing impairments. The teen program on Norwegian Sky takes place in the Entourage Teen Club on Deck 11.

The final day of the cruise was a much-needed beach day at Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas. After two days straight of sightseeing, an afternoon of lounging in the sun and sipping margaritas from the Patron Bar was exactly what we needed. On our first day, we took a wide-ranging tour of Old Havana as well as some other neighborhoods with a multifaceted tour guide from Havana Journeys. On day two, we took a self-guided tour of the two forts located across the bay.
